New to AI governance?

What is AI governance?

AI governance is the set of rules, roles and controls that decide which AI uses are allowed, who approves them and how they are checked.

It covers the whole life of a use case: the request, the risk review, the build, the release and monitoring after go-live.

Done well, it produces evidence: an inventory, approvals, test results and logs that auditors, regulators and customers can read.

Risk tiers

How do you tier AI use cases by risk?

Four tiers, based on the EU AI Act risk levels and adapted to your policy. The tier decides the controls.

  1. Prohibited

ExamplesSocial scoring, manipulation that exploits vulnerable people.

    ControlsNot built. Stopped at intake.

  2. High risk

ExamplesHiring decisions, credit scoring, access to essential services.

ControlsImpact assessment, human decision, logging, testing before release.

  3. Limited risk

ExamplesCustomer chat assistants, generated text and images.

ControlsPeople told they are dealing with AI; content labeled.

  4. Minimal risk

ExamplesSummarizing internal documents, drafting, spam filtering.

ControlsListed in the inventory; standard IT controls.

What we do

What does an AI governance framework include?

Eight parts, set up in the order your AI portfolio needs them.

  • Framework

Principles, structure and an operating rhythm.

  • Policy

Acceptable use in language people follow.

  • Inventory and tiers

Every AI use listed, owned and tiered.

  • Assessments

    Impact checks for higher-risk uses.

  • Human oversight

Who approves what, built into the flow.

  • Vendor checks

Data, security and terms for each model.

  • Evidence

Logs, tests and incidents an auditor reads.

  • Training

Courses for every role that touches AI.

Decision rights

Who decides what

One accountable owner per decision, so no AI use falls between teams.

Controls and evidence

From policy to proof

Each policy line is enforced by a control and leaves evidence behind.

  1. The policy says: No customer data goes to a model without approval

The control that enforces it: Data class checked at intake; only approved models reachable

The evidence an auditor reads: Intake record and approved model register

  2. The policy says: High-risk uses end in a human decision

The control that enforces it: Approval step built into the workflow

The evidence an auditor reads: Approval log with who, what and when

  3. The policy says: People know when they deal with AI

The control that enforces it: Disclosure text in chats and generated messages

The evidence an auditor reads: Release checklist with screenshots

  4. The policy says: AI is tested before it is released

The control that enforces it: Real cases replayed on every change

The evidence an auditor reads: Test report kept per release

  5. The policy says: Incidents are reported and reviewed

The control that enforces it: Monitoring alerts go to a named owner

The evidence an auditor reads: Incident log and review notes

Frameworks

Which AI governance frameworks do you align to?

One set of controls, mapped to each framework your buyers, auditors and regulators ask about.

Cost and timing

What it costs and how long it takes

The review is free

A 60-minute architecture review of your AI governance setup, with a written plan you keep.

A fixed-scope proposal first

Before any work starts you get a written proposal: a fixed-scope project with milestones, or a monthly plan. You approve it, or you do not.

Timing follows scope

How long it takes depends on what is in scope. The proposal states the milestones, so you see the timeline before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

AI governance, answered.

Straight answers about frameworks, policy, human oversight, ISO/IEC 42001 and where to start.

AI governance is the set of policies, roles and controls that decide which AI uses are allowed, who approves them, and how they are tested, monitored and evidenced.

An AI policy, a use-case inventory with risk tiers, decision rights, an intake and approval path, impact assessments, human oversight, monitoring and logging, and role-based training.

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework, ISO/IEC 42001 and, where it applies, the EU AI Act. We map one set of controls to each, so you do not run three programs.

You need the basics: a short policy, a risk tier for the use case, a named owner and a human approval step. The full framework grows with your portfolio.

We decide which actions AI may take alone and which need a person, build that approval into the workflow, and log every decision.

Yes. We set up the AI management system the standard describes and gather the evidence. The certification audit itself is carried out by an accredited certification body.

No. We design and implement governance and controls. Your legal and compliance team, or outside counsel, confirms how each regulation applies to you.

Yes. The same framework covers Salesforce Agentforce, Claude and other model APIs, Microsoft Copilot and automation tools such as n8n, with controls built into each.

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is published by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology. ISO/IEC 42001 is a standard of ISO and IEC. Agentforce and Salesforce are trademarks of Salesforce, Inc.; Claude of Anthropic; Microsoft Copilot of Microsoft; n8n of n8n GmbH. SynconAI is an independent consulting firm.
